Trout Fishing With Live Bait

Fishing live bait is by far one of the most productive ways you can fish for trout period! Yep that’s right good old fashioned live bait, more specifically live bait that is native to the area you are trout fishing.

When you step back and think about things every artificial bait tries to achieve one thing, duplicate the action of some sort of live bait. Now don’t get me wrong I love fishing artificial’s, it’s a challenge and can be much more exciting, but when it comes right down to it and you want the best of the odds on your side, fishing live bait is the way to go.

Many trout anglers will go to their favorite bait shop to buy their live bait, which I cant say is the wrong thing to do, but it is not the best approach. Most bait shops have their bait shipped in from neighboring states, which means the bait they are selling you is not native to the area you are trout fishing. To get the best live bait for your situation you’ll need to do a little research and then go foraging for it. You first have to find out what the trout are eating, you can do this by talking to other anglers that already know or by examining the contents of a trouts stomach, if you are the catch and release type angler you wont be able to pull the last tip off, but one thing you can do is forage a bit. Take a walk along the banks of the water you are interested in fishing, flip rocks and examine what types of bait foods are available in the area, most likely trout will be hot for those. Instead of buying a dozen nigh crawlers go out to the streams edge and try finding worms that are found in and around the trouts habitat.

There’s a very good reason as to why an avid fly fisherman pays attention to local hatches and then tries duplicating it. Natural, native baits work, Period! This fact does not just apply to trout fishing either. It also applies to just about any other type of fishing you can think of from cat fishing to bass fishing.

There’s nothing wrong with artificial’s, but if you want almost garunteed results the next time your out trout fishing, on any given day live bait is the way to go.
